On Thursday, M S Dhoni rolled back the years with 16 runs off the final four balls of Chennai Super Kings' victorious chase over Mumbai Indians, who are currently ranked last in the Indian Premier League points table.
After Chennai skipper Ravindra Jadeja won the toss and asked them to bat first, Dhoni remained unbeaten with 28 off 13 balls, three fours and a six, against Mumbai, who reached 155/7. The loss was Mumbai's seventh in a row, and the team remains winless this season despite being the most successful in the league's history with five titles.
This season, Dhoni relinquished the captaincy to Jadeja, and Chennai, the tournament's other superpower, has had a shaky start, winning only two of their seven games and finishing second-last in the 10-team league.
Jaydev Unadkat, who had earlier given up 31 runs in three overs, delivered the crucial last over of the Chennai chase and was thrashed for 17 runs all over the park by a classic Dhoni. CSK needed 16 off the last four deliveries, so Dhoni tore into Unadkat and smashed 6,4,2,4 to seal the deal.
Dwayne Pretorius, who had set the tone with his 22 off 14 to set the stage for Dhoni's last flourish, also detailed the instructions Dhoni gave them during their time on the crease.
