With his term coming to an end after the T20 World Cup next month, India head coach Ravi Shastri admitted that there would be some "sadness," but he is confident that he is leaving at the correct time, having "over-achieved" during his time in charge.
Shastri took over as head coach for the first time in 2017, and was reappointed in 2019. The T20 World Cup kicks off on October 17 in the United Arab Emirates.
After testing positive for Covid, the 59-year-old is being quarantined in this city. In an interview with 'The Guardian,' Shastri stated that winning the T20 World Cup would be exceptional, but that the team had already accomplished extraordinary feats during his tenure.
"I believe so because I've accomplished what I set out to do." Five years as No. 1 in Test cricket, with victories in Australia twice and England once.
"Earlier this summer, I told Michael Atherton, 'This is the pinnacle for me - to beat Australia in Australia and win in England in Covid times.' We're up 2-1 over England, and the way we played at Lord's and the Oval was incredible," the former player stated.
When the fifth and final Test in Manchester was called off due to a Covid epidemic in the touring camp, India was leading England 2-1.
India also won T20 series in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and England during Shastri's tenure.
Additionally, we've defeated all of the world's top teams in their home countries during the five-day game. Winning the (T20) World Cup will make all of our hard work worthwhile. Nothing more exists.
I believe in one thing - when you're welcomed, don't stay too long. And in terms of what I wanted to accomplish with the team, I've done better than I expected. In a Covid year, to overcome Australia and take the series lead in England. It's the most fulfilling moment of my cricket career, which spans four decades."
The flamboyant coach would relish winning an ICC trophy for the team. The Shastri-Virat Kohli-era team has not won an ICC trophy yet.
"We're throwing everything at it. Absolutely. If we play up to our abilities, we're going to win. We are going to love it no matter what. Don't be pressured by test match intensity. T20 cricket is meant to provide entertainment. I want to exit in style "he boldly proclaimed
"Of course, I will be saddened by the end of my time with these talented and fun people. The dressing room has been full of good memories. But, above all, we achieved excellent results in cricket, which made the trip unforgettable "He added.
He also mentioned the development of Jasprit Bumrah, who came to be known as a deadly Test bowler during his tenure.
"Not a single person believed Jasprit Bumrah could play test cricket until he did. As a bowler, he excelled with the white ball. However, when I took over as coach, I questioned myself on how I could succeed abroad: "How do I get 20 wickets-"
"I understood I needed four elite quick bowlers due to my lengthy experience against the West Indies in Test cricket. South Africa was ground zero for this drama, and it began there in 2018 when they took us down 2-1. I thought Bumrah should've started in the first Test in Cape Town.
"I made the Indian selectors aware of the possibility a month before the first Test and I advised them not to risk him." I'd rather keep him hidden from the world until after Cape Town.
Three years back. he's now taken 101 wickets since then (in 24 Tests). "It's truly special." PTI
